Every Promise in Psalm 91 Listed and Explained

Psalm 91 is essentially a list of promises — extraordinary, specific, comprehensive commitments from God to those who dwell in his presence. But these promises are woven into poetic imagery and narrative flow in a way that can make them easy to pass over too quickly. This article does something simple but powerful: it lists every identifiable promise in Psalm 91 and names it clearly. Use this as a reference guide, a meditation tool, or a checklist of what God has committed to providing.

The Foundational Promises (Verses 1–4)

1. Rest in the shadow of the Almighty. “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1, WEB). Deep, genuine rest for those who dwell in God’s presence.

2. He is your refuge and fortress. “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:2, WEB). God himself is the place of safety — a refuge to flee to and a fortress that cannot be taken.

3. Deliverance from hidden snares. “He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler.” (Psalm 91:3, WEB). God sees traps the believer cannot see and actively works to deliver from them.

4. Deliverance from deadly pestilence. “…and from the deadly pestilence.” (Psalm 91:3, WEB). God’s protection extends to epidemic disease and mass health threats.

5. Covered with his feathers. “He will cover you with his feathers.” (Psalm 91:4, WEB). God envelops the believer in his own presence — intimate, warm, comprehensive.

6. Refuge under his wings. “Under his wings you will take refuge.” (Psalm 91:4, WEB). The tender image of a sheltering bird — the believer is drawn close to God himself.

7. His faithfulness as shield and buckler. “His faithfulness is your shield and buckler.” (Psalm 91:4, WEB). God’s reliability and covenant faithfulness constitute a comprehensive defence against every attack.

The Promises of Freedom from Fear (Verses 5–8)

8. No fear of terror by night. Freedom from nocturnal fear — the 3am anxiety and the nameless dread. (Psalm 91:5, WEB)

9. No fear of the arrow by day. Freedom from visible, open threat and sudden attack. (Psalm 91:5, WEB)

10. No fear of hidden pestilence. Freedom from the anxiety of unseen disease and hidden danger. (Psalm 91:6, WEB)

11. No fear of noonday destruction. Freedom from overwhelming, public catastrophe. (Psalm 91:6, WEB)

12. The threat will not come near you. Even when devastation surrounds others, God maintains a protective boundary around the one who dwells in him. (Psalm 91:7, WEB)

13. You will only observe, not be harmed. The believer is a witness to consequences, not a victim of them. (Psalm 91:8, WEB)

The Promises of Protection and Authority (Verses 9–13)

14. No evil will happen to you. For those who have made God their refuge, the ultimate power of evil is restrained. (Psalm 91:10, WEB)

15. No plague near your dwelling. God’s protection extends to your home and household. (Psalm 91:10, WEB)

16. Angels charged with your protection. God commissions angelic beings for the specific purpose of guarding you. (Psalm 91:11, WEB)

17. You will not dash your foot against a stone. The protection is so detailed that even minor harm is prevented when God directs it. (Psalm 91:12, WEB)

18. Authority over lion and cobra. The believer does not merely survive enemies — he walks over them with divine authority. (Psalm 91:13, WEB)

19. Victory over young lion and serpent. Even the enemy at his most powerful and most subtle is placed beneath the feet of the one under God’s protection. (Psalm 91:13, WEB)

God’s Direct Promises (Verses 14–16)

20. Deliverance. “Therefore I will deliver him.” (Psalm 91:14, WEB). God commits to personal rescue.

21. Exaltation. “I will set him on high.” (Psalm 91:14, WEB). God lifts the believer above threats.

22. Answered prayer. “He will call on me, and I will answer him.” (Psalm 91:15, WEB). God commits to responding when the believer cries out.

23. Divine presence in trouble. “I will be with him in trouble.” (Psalm 91:15, WEB). Even unfixed trouble is inhabited by God’s presence.

24. Honour. “I will deliver him, and honor him.” (Psalm 91:15, WEB). God will not only rescue but glorify those who love him.

25. Long life. “I will satisfy him with long life.” (Psalm 91:16, WEB). Full, satisfied, purposeful living.

26. The showing of salvation. “…and show him my salvation.” (Psalm 91:16, WEB). The full revelation of God’s saving work — culminating in Jesus and his resurrection.

A Closing Prayer

Lord, every one of these promises is yours and you do not break your word. I receive them all — not because I have earned them but because you have given them to those who love you and know your name. Let each promise become a living reality in my life. I trust you to keep every word. Amen.
